How to Check if Your Plumber Is Licensed in Victoria (and Why It Matters)

Hiring an unlicensed plumber in Victoria is not just risky - it is illegal for any work over $750, and it voids your home insurance, your warranty, and your future sale. Yet around one in four quotes Melbourne homeowners receive come from someone who is not properly licensed. Here is the 60-second check that protects you.

The official VBA register

The Victorian Building Authority (vba.vic.gov.au) maintains a free public register of every licensed and registered plumber in Victoria. Go to the site, search by name or licence number, and within seconds you can confirm: is this person licensed, what classes of work are they authorised for (water supply, sanitary, drainage, gas, roofing, mechanical, irrigation), and is the licence current.

Newton Huang holds Plumbing Licence #107733, current and registered with the VBA for all standard residential classes.

What the licence classes mean

Not every plumbing licence covers every job. Victorian licences are issued by class: water supply, sanitary, drainage, mechanical services, roofing (stormwater), irrigation, fire protection, and gas-fitting. A plumber doing your hot water unit needs gas-fitting if it is gas. A plumber doing your sewer reline needs drainage. Always check the licence covers the actual work you need.

Why unlicensed work is so expensive in the long run

Four reasons. First, insurance: a non-licensed install voids your home insurance, full stop. A water or fire claim originating from non-compliant plumbing gets refused. Second, sale of the home: every Section 32 / Vendor Statement should disclose plumbing work, and buyers’ solicitors now ask for Certificates of Compliance. No COC means no licence means a discount or no sale. Third, manufacturer warranty: a $4,000 hot water unit installed by an unlicensed person has no warranty. Fourth, consumer protection: Consumer Affairs Victoria (consumer.vic.gov.au) and Domestic Building Dispute Resolution Victoria (dbdrv.vic.gov.au) can only help you if the original installer was licensed.

Red flags in a quote

Cash-only with no GST listed. Generic ABN with no plumbing licence number on the invoice. Reluctance to provide a written quote. No mention of a Certificate of Compliance. Pressure to start the same day with no paperwork. Pricing dramatically below market.

What a legitimate Melbourne plumbing invoice looks like

ABN, GST, plumbing licence number, a clear scope, materials and labour broken out, and a commitment to issue a VBA Certificate of Compliance for any work that requires it.
