Hot Water System Installation
Whether you’re replacing a tired old unit or planning hot water for a new build, the right system makes a lasting difference to comfort and running cost. Newton Huang installs gas storage, gas continuous flow, electric storage and heat pump hot water systems across Melbourne’s eastern suburbs, with honest advice about which option suits your home, your hot water habits and your budget — plus a full compliance certificate on completion.
Choosing the Right System
-
We install the full range of hot water systems to suit every home and budget — including gas storage tanks, electric storage tanks, continuous flow (instantaneous) gas systems, heat pump hot water systems, and solar hot water with gas or electric boost. Whether you're replacing an old unit, upgrading to something more efficient, or fitting out a new build, Newton Huang will recommend the best system for your household size, energy preferences, and available space.
-
Newton Plumbing installs hot water systems across a wide local service area, including all surrounding suburbs and nearby regions. From single-bedroom units to large family homes and commercial premises, our licensed plumber and gas fitter can come to you. Not sure if we cover your suburb? Give Newton a quick call — we very likely service your area.
-
The right system depends on a few key factors — household size and hot water usage, available energy sources (gas, electric, solar), space for installation (indoor, outdoor, or rooftop), upfront budget versus long-term running costs, and any government rebates you may be eligible for. Newton will assess your property, ask the right questions, and recommend a system that gives you the best balance of performance, efficiency, and value over its lifespan.
-
Most straightforward like-for-like replacements take between 2 and 4 hours, so you'll have hot water back on the same day. Larger jobs — such as switching from electric to gas, installing solar or heat pump systems, or relocating the unit — can take a full day or sometimes two. Newton will give you a clear timeframe upfront, and we always aim to minimise disruption so you're not left without hot water any longer than necessary.
-
Absolutely. Every hot water system we install comes with the full manufacturer's warranty (typically 5–10 years on the unit, depending on the brand and model) plus our workmanship warranty on the installation itself. For gas systems, we also issue a Gas Compliance Certificate as required by law. You'll receive all documentation on completion — keep it on file for warranty claims, insurance, and any future property sale.
Four categories cover most hot water system installations. Gas storage tanks are simple, reliable, and well-suited to homes with a decent gas supply. Gas continuous flow units never run out, save on standby heat loss, and are particularly popular for renovations. Electric storage tanks are the cheapest to install but typically the most expensive to run unless paired with off-peak power or solar. Heat pumps cost more up front but can dramatically lower running costs over the unit’s lifetime, especially with daytime solar generation. We walk through the trade-offs in plain language rather than pushing a particular brand.

Our Process
Phone Consult — We ask about your household size, current unit, and where it’s located. Most of the time, we can give you a ballpark price on the phone.
On-Site Quote — We arrive within 24 hours, measure the install location, check gas line capacity, and email you a fixed written quote the same day.
Order & Book — We order your unit and book the install, usually within 48 hours of quote approval. Most Blackburn jobs are completed the same week.
Install Day — Most Blackburn installs take 2 to 4 hours. We commission the system, walk you through the controls, and lodge the Certificate of Compliance with the VBA within 48 hours.
Siting and Pipework
Unit placement affects performance, noise, and serviceability. Externally mounted units need adequate clearance, weather protection, and access for future service. Internal storage tanks need a safe-tray, an overflow pathway, and proper venting. New connections often need to be brought to compliance even when an old unit was technically acceptable when first installed, so we plan accordingly.
What the Job Includes
A standard installation includes removal and disposal of the old unit, supply of the new unit, water and gas or electrical connections, a code-compliant tempering valve, isolation valves and a labelled shut-off, pressure testing, commissioning, and a written compliance certificate. We tidy the site, talk you through the controls, and register warranty paperwork with the manufacturer where required.
Rebates and Incentives
Heat pump and high-efficiency installations may qualify for state or federal rebates that change from time to time. Where rebates are relevant, we will let you know what is currently available and what paperwork is needed; we install models from the registered list where it improves your eligibility.
