Gas Line Installation & Extensions
Whether you’re adding a new gas cooktop in a renovated kitchen, running a supply to an outdoor BBQ, extending a line for a new ducted heater, or moving an existing appliance during a refit, gas line work has to be carried out by a licensed gas fitter and signed off with a compliance certificate. Newton Huang installs and extends natural gas and LPG lines across Melbourne’s eastern suburbs, with all the paperwork and pressure-testing that protects your home, your insurance and the next owner.
What Gas Line Work Involves
A proper gas line installation is more than just running a pipe. We design the run so it meets AS/NZS 5601, size the line correctly for the appliance load, choose appropriate materials, support the pipework so it can’t move or chafe, isolate it correctly with a labelled shut-off, and pressure-test the completed work to confirm there are no leaks. We also confirm flue and ventilation requirements where the appliance needs them, since an oversized or undersized installation can cause appliances to run inefficiently or unsafely.
-
Absolutely — gas work is strictly regulated and must only be carried out by a licensed gas fitter. It's illegal (and extremely dangerous) for unlicensed individuals to install, modify, or repair gas lines. Newton Plumbing is a fully licensed and insured plumber and gas fitter, so every job is completed to code with a compliance certificate provided on completion for your records and peace of mind.

Newton Plumbing offers professional gas line installation, extension, and repair services across a wide local service area, including surrounding suburbs and nearby regions. Whether it's a residential gas cooktop connection, an outdoor BBQ line, or a commercial gas fit-out, our licensed team can travel to you. Not sure if we cover your area? Give Newton a quick call — we likely service your suburb.

The most common warning signs include the smell of rotten eggs (a sulphur-like odour added to gas for detection), a hissing sound near gas appliances or pipes, dead patches of grass or plants above an underground gas line, unusually high gas bills, or physical symptoms like dizziness, nausea, or headaches indoors. If you suspect a leak, turn off the gas at the meter, open windows, avoid flames or electrical switches, evacuate, and call us immediately.
-
We handle everything from small extensions to full new installations. Common jobs include connecting gas cooktops, ovens, and hot water systems, running new lines to outdoor BBQs, fire pits, and patio heaters, converting homes from electric to gas appliances, repairing leaks and damaged pipework, and installing or relocating gas meters. We also carry out gas line pressure testing and compliance inspections for property sales and renovations.
-
It depends on the scope of the job. A simple appliance connection or BBQ line extension can often be completed in a few hours, while a larger new build or full home gas fit-out may take a day or two. Once we assess your property and discuss your requirements, Newton will provide a clear, upfront quote and realistic timeframe — so there are no surprises and you know exactly when your gas will be up and running.
Common Projects
We regularly handle new cooktop and oven installations, BBQ point installations for the back deck or alfresco area, new continuous flow hot water supply lines, ducted heater relocations, conversions between natural gas and LPG, line extensions to garages and granny flats, and meter relocations. Where the existing service is too small to support an additional appliance, we coordinate with the gas retailer for a meter upgrade before completing the new run.
Compliance Certificates Included
Every gas line installation we complete is registered with Energy Safe Victoria and supplied with the appropriate Type A or Type B compliance certificate. This certificate is the legal proof of safe installation. Without it, the work is not legal, will fail a routine safety check, and can create problems at the point of property sale. We supply the certificate to you in writing as part of the job.
Working with Builders and Renovators
If you are renovating, we are happy to coordinate with your builder, cabinet-maker, or kitchen designer to make sure the gas point sits exactly where the appliance will land. We come back to do the final connection after the cabinets are in, and we tidy up any temporary capping or isolation we put in during the rough-in stage. Clear, early communication saves expensive rework.
