Blocked Drains & CCTV in Mitcham
Mitcham has an unusual history for a Melbourne suburb. From the 1860s the land here was used for orchards, brickmaking and pottery — there were working clay pits in this suburb long before there were streets. The residential Mitcham most people know is post-war, built out from the 1950s onward.
That combination is why I end up with a camera down a lot of Mitcham drains.
1950s infrastructure at end of life
Mitcham has a high proportion of long-tenure owner-occupiers, which means a lot of homes are still on their original services. Seventy years is a long innings for a jointed sewer line. The failures I see most:
Displaced joints letting roots in
Cracked earthenware, often a hairline that's been weeping for years before anything blocks
Bellies — a sag in the line that holds water and catches everything that passes
None of these are dramatic. They're just old, and they all announce themselves the same way: a drain that's been "a bit slow" for months, then one day isn't.
Why "a bit slow" is worth a call
A partial blockage is the cheapest version of this problem you will ever have. Once it goes fully, you're dealing with an overflow, possibly inside, and an after-hours call-out. The gap between those two states is often only weeks.
If your shower is draining slower than it did last year, or the toilet gurgles when the washing machine empties, that's the line telling you something.
How I work in Mitcham
Clear it, camera it, show you the footage, and tell you honestly whether it needs a repair or just a clean every couple of years. Some Mitcham lines have another decade in them. Some don't. You should get to see which yours is.
