Gas Compliance Certificates
In Victoria, every piece of regulated gas work must be supplied with a Type A or Type B compliance certificate from the licensed gas fitter who performed it — it’s your legal evidence that the job was done by a qualified tradesperson, designed and installed to AS/NZS 5601, and pressure-tested for leaks before being put back into service. Newton Huang issues compliance certificates for every gas job we complete, and we can also inspect and certify existing installations where the original paperwork has been lost.
What a Gas Compliance Certification includes
The certificate documents the address, the licensed gas fitter, the work performed, the appliances involved, the test pressures and results, and the date. It is registered with Energy Safe Victoria and a copy is kept on file by both the installer and the homeowner. Without that registration, the work is not considered compliant, even if it was technically done correctly.

Newton Plumbing issues Gas Compliance Certificates across a broad local service area in Melbourne’s Eastern Suburbs, including all suburbs like Blackburn, Camberwell, Glen Waverley, Box Hill and nearby regions. Whether you're a homeowner, landlord, real estate agent, or property manager, our licensed gas fitter can travel to your property promptly to carry out the inspection and provide your certificate. Not sure if we cover your suburb? Give Newton a call — we likely service your area.

A certificate is required any time new gas work has been completed — including new installations, appliance connections, gas line extensions, alterations, or repairs. Landlords are also required to ensure gas installations are safe and certified at regular intervals for rental properties. If you're selling a home with gas appliances, having a current compliance certificate gives buyers confidence the system is safe and legal.
-
Our licensed gas fitter carries out a thorough inspection that includes pressure testing the gas lines for leaks, checking appliance connections, ventilation, and flueing, verifying that all installations meet current Australian Standards and local regulations, and inspecting isolation valves and meter setup. Once everything passes, the certificate is issued and lodged as required — giving you full documented compliance.
-
Most residential gas compliance inspections take between 30 minutes and a couple of hours, depending on the size of the property and the number of gas appliances. Newton Plumbing aims to provide your certificate on the same day as the inspection wherever possible, so you can move forward with your sale, lease, or peace of mind without delay.
When You Need a Certificate
You need a current gas compliance certificate whenever new gas pipework is installed or altered, when a new gas appliance is connected, when an existing appliance is relocated, and often when a property is being sold or leased. Insurers, conveyancers and building inspectors routinely ask for compliance paperwork, and a missing certificate can hold up a settlement or void a claim. If you’ve inherited gas appliances from a previous owner without paperwork, it’s worth getting them inspected.
Inspection of Existing Work
Where homeowners ask us to certify an installation we did not originally perform, we treat it as a full inspection. We visually check the pipework, fittings, and supports, confirm correct sizing and venting, pressure-test the system, check the operation and combustion of each appliance, and only issue a certificate if everything passes. Where defects are found, we provide a written quote to rectify and re-test before the certificate is issued.
Why Certificates Matter at Property Sale
Properties are increasingly sold with checks against compliance documentation. A missing or expired certificate for the gas heater, hot water unit, or cooktop can lead to renegotiation of the sale price or last-minute requests for rectification work. Getting paperwork in order early is far less stressful than discovering the gap a week before settlement.
