Blocked Drains & CCTV in Burwood
Burwood is the only suburb on my patch that sits in two councils at once — part of it is City of Monash, part is City of Whitehorse. That matters more than it sounds. Tree controls, permit requirements and the rules around works near vegetation differ between the two, and the boundary doesn't follow anything obvious from the street.
Before any drain work that needs excavation in Burwood, the first question is which council you're actually in.
Two kinds of Burwood drain problem
The suburb splits fairly neatly.
The older owner-occupied stock. Burwood filled in after the war, spreading east along Burwood Highway toward Bennettswood. Those homes are on original or near-original drainage — earthenware, jointed, and old enough that the joints have moved. Root intrusion and cracked sections are the usual finding.
The rental stock around Deakin. Different problem entirely. Shared houses put far more through a drain than the pipe was designed for, and the blockages are usually what's gone down them — wipes, cooking fat, hair. Those clear easily. They also come back, which is why landlords here tend to get an annual clean rather than an emergency call.
If you're a landlord
Two things worth knowing together. A recurring blockage in a rental is almost always cheaper to prevent than to attend at 11pm on a Sunday. And from 1 March 2027, Victorian rental properties face new minimum standards at each new lease — including 4-star showerheads — so there's a natural moment coming to get the plumbing looked at properly rather than piecemeal.
The process
High-pressure jetting to clear it, a CCTV camera to find out why, then a straight answer about whether it needs anything more. Fixed price agreed before I start, and I'm the person who turns up — not a subcontractor with your address.
