Gas Leak Detection & Repair in Vermont

If you can smell gas inside or outside your Vermont home, stop, turn off the meter at the street, get everyone out, and call. Newton Huang is a licensed gasfitter with 15 years’ experience tracing leaks across Vermont — from meter risers and underground runs to indoor pipework, isolation valves and appliance connections. We isolate safely, locate the leak with electronic gas detection and soapy-water testing, repair to AS 5601, and lodge a Certificate of Compliance with the VBA.

What a Vermont Gas Leak Job Looks Like

Every Vermont gas leak callout starts with a safe isolation at the meter, then a methodical search using electronic gas detection and leak-detector solution to pinpoint the source — hob fittings, flexible appliance hoses, copper joints, threaded unions, regulators, or underground HDPE runs. We then quote a fixed-price repair or replacement, complete the work to AS 5601, pressure-test the system, recommission your appliances, and lodge a Certificate of Compliance with the VBA so the job is properly documented.

  • Don’t switch anything on or off, don’t use the phone inside the house, and don’t light a match. Open windows and doors, get everyone outside, and turn the gas off at the meter (handle to vertical = off). Once you’re outside, call us — we’ll talk you through anything else and head straight over.

  • Smell narrows the area, then we get scientific. We pressure-test the system to spec, isolate sections of pipework, and use an electronic gas detector along with leak-detector solution on every fitting. For underground runs we use bar-hole testing or a tracer-gas method to pinpoint a leak to a metre or so before excavation.

  • Usually only for the duration of the repair, which is often within the day. If the leak is on a single branch we can isolate that run while leaving the rest of the gas live to the house. For meter-side or major leaks we co-ordinate with the gas distributor for a controlled shut-off and restart.

  • Yes — every gasfitting repair in Vermont gets a Certificate of Compliance lodged with the VBA. You receive a copy by email along with our invoice and pressure-test results. Insurers, conveyancers and future buyers will ask for this, so keep it on file.

  • Underground gas lines (HDPE poly or steel) sometimes corrode, fracture from ground movement, or get damaged by garden works. We isolate, locate the leak section, and quote either a section repair with a transition fitting or a full re-run from the meter. Trenching, electrofusion welding, pressure-testing and back-filling are all part of the job, and the new run is signed off on the Certificate of Compliance.
